Voith Paper:

LEIPA-Schwedt PM 4 - start of production

On July 30, 2004, the first LWC paper was wound up on the Sirius reel on PM 4 at LEIPA Georg Leinfelder GmbH in Schwedt/Oder, Germany. The take-up of production by LEIPA took place on August 2, 2004, after LWC paper in saleable quality was produced. This was a further important step in the handling of this project, reached four weeks ahead of the contractually agreed start-up date. This was possible due to the Process Line Package (PLP) from Voith, which minimizes the number of interfaces and therefore shortens the project lifetime. PM 4 runs at 1500 m/min at the Sirius wind-up unit.

The start-up team with employees from LEIPA and Voith conducted the performance tests in accordance with a detailed start-up time schedule, that had already been coordinated for an early start-up.

Voith winders and the Voith roll transport system with roll wrapping had already been thoroughly pretested so that troublefree processing was guaranteed.

Initially, base paper was produced for a short time until the Voith Automation Quality System tested and optimized the paper. After that, the soft calender, Janus calender and coating unit were started.

The scope of supply in Schwedt covered the LWC paper machine based on the One Platform Concept. The supply also included the complete stock preparation, approach flow and broke systems. The new DIP 2 stock preparation system went into operation on schedule as early as mid June and produced high-quality stock from 100% recovered paper. Prior to the start-up of PM 4, the produced stock was used on PM 1 in LEIPA.

The two Varitop winders as well as the roll transport and wrapping system were also included in Voith’s scope of supply.

In addition to the machine control system, Voith also supplied the quality control system, the process control system, the web inspection system and the web break analysis system as well as the monitoring system. The scope of supply also included a long-term service agreement for the quality and process control system with field service. The entire engineering for DIP and PM buildings as well as for the production process was supplied by Voith as a Process Line Package (PLP). Voith, therefore, takes overall responsibility for the mechanical engineering, process engineering and control engineering of the production process.

Voith Fabrics was represented in the start-up of the PM with Horizon wires in the former, Omega press felts for the first press and second press top position and with Quantum II dryer fabrics in the first to fourth dryer groups.

The project management, the main suppliers as well as other companies involved in the project, such as Schuster Engineering, that carried out the general construction planning for the new buildings, worked hand in hand. This permitted open and trustful cooperation. Through the agreed system partnership, Voith will also perform intensive after-sales service for Leipa and also in future ensure the competitiveness of the machine and the quality of the paper based on technical progress.

With the start-up of PM 4, Voith has again proved its competence as a process supplier and won another satisfied customer.

In 1992, the more than 150-year-old company, LEIPA Georg Leinfelder GmbH, owned by the Schrödinger family, acquired the former paper combine, VEB Papier & Karton in Schwedt an der Oder and, in addition to the traditional location in Schrobenhausen, Upper Bavaria, expanded it into a significant mill and second main pillar of the company. Uncoated and coated paperboard, graphic paper grades in LWC quality as well as brown and white corrugated board base papers are manufactured in Schwedt.

Voith Paper is a division of the Voith Group and one of the leading partners to the paper industry. More than one third of the world's paper production is produced on Voith Paper machines.

Voith sets standards in paper technology, power transmission engineering, power generation and industrial services. Formed on January 1, 1867, it has a current workforce of approx. 24,000, sales of EUR 3.3 billion and over 180 locations worldwide, and is one of the largest family-owned enterprises in Europe.
